Just us, the cameras, and those wonderful people out there in the dark!&#8230; All right, Mr. DeMille, I&#8217;m ready for my close-up<strong>.\u201d <\/strong><\/em><strong>\u2013 Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), Sunset Blvd., Paramount (1950)<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If it weren\u2019t for James Cameron\u2019s (Avatar + fame) session at NAB, you would swear you were at a mash up CES (Consumer Electronics Show) and an IT (information technology) conference.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the sessions and discussions focused on:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 social media and mobile delivery<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 how Tellywood was going to optimize their network\/content assets<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 cloud computing\/storage (we\u2019ll look closely at this in a few weeks)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 how the old guard was going to protect their stuff\/squeeze out kids who seemed more interested in viewers than profits.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Gilles looked over the proceedings and said, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>You don&#8217;t yell at a sleepwalker &#8211; he may fall and break his neck.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cameron loves technology almost as much as he loves movies.<\/p>\n<p>He took his shots at the broadcast folks saying it was their fault we still don\u2019t have a lot of 3D on our entertainment devices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3D Still Breathing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">As for 3D II it\u2019s getting its second wind:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ESPN, Discovery regularly have 3D shows and they\u2019re heavying up for 2012<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There are about 25,000 3D movie screens worldwide (8K in the US)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 160 3D movies were released between 2008-2011, 140 projected for 2012-2015<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In the US, 10 3D channels will launch this year, 25 in 2012<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Similar shifts are taking place in\u00a0 \u201cEurope, Australia, Asia, the Middle East<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 About 1\/3 of US households will buy 3DTV in the next three years (aahh\u20262\/3 won\u2019t)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In Europe, 42% of homes are projected to have 3DTVs by 2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 95 million 3D devices \u2014 including gaming devices, set-tops, PCs \u2014 will be sold worldwide this year<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Western Europe, Japan, the U.S. will be the largest markets, accounting for 93% of 3D device sales in 2011and by 2014 the global installed base is projected to be nearly 900 million 3D-capable devices<\/p>\n<p>A lot of that is contingent on people accepting the idea of wearing glasses for their viewing or refining glasses-free technology.<\/p>\n<p>Cameron likes to push Hollywood as well and said it was time to break from its celluloid past of 24FPS (typical shooting frame rate) and shoot at 48 or 60FPS to deliver entertainment images that are as important as the creative work.<\/p>\n<p>Doing it will only require a projector software upgrade so it won\u2019t be long before you\u2019ll think your movies are better and you won\u2019t know why.<\/p>\n<p>Now you know.<\/p>\n<p>But that wasn\u2019t the real plot for this year\u2019s NAB and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>A person we respect distilled the mad rush of Tellywood, IP firms, Telco to be dominant in the consumer\u2019s mind by saying, <em>\u201cEntertainment.\u00a0 It\u2019s what we\u2019ve boiled our lives down to. \u00a0We\u2019re not too worried about our livelihood.\u00a0 We work\u2026to fund our entertainment.\u00a0 Sad isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Guess if you\u2019re in \u2013 or want to be in &#8211; the entertainment industry that\u2019s a good thing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coming Out Party<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Google isn\u2019t used to paying for much, just giving you some services and rake in the money from clicks, ad sales.<\/p>\n<p>But offering to put up Tellywood\u2019s content (legally) didn\u2019t sit well with the studio\/net moguls since the other guys &#8212; Netflix, Hulu, networks, cable companies \u2013 \u201cvolunteered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They finally decided to come out of the closet and admit they were a media company.<\/p>\n<p>Boy, that was a well-kept secret!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25520\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-2.jpg?resize=413%2C277\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-2.jpg 413w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-2-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>New Network \u2013 <\/strong>After years of saying they weren\u2019t a content company, Google finally came out of the closet and said that they were going to fund professional content production that would be aired on YouTube.\u00a0\u00a0 They will also set up more than 20 video channels with more in the planning stages.\u00a0 It can only enrich their ad revenues.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Illustration \u2013 Agency France Presse<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They didn\u2019t buy YouTube for a measly $1.6B five years ago just to let folks everywhere upload their stuff (24 hours of video every minute).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25521\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-3.jpg?resize=408%2C321\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-3.jpg 408w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-3-300x236.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Growing Numbers \u2013 <\/strong>Content developers upload more than 24 hours of video a minute to YouTube and the site regularly has more than two billion visitors a month.<strong> Source \u2013 comScore<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They have the traffic \u2013 about one billion viewers a month &#8212; but the viewing attention span is pretty short.\u00a0 That\u2019s probably why they put out $100M to indies and others willing to produce higher-end content.<\/p>\n<p>To help with the production generation, they bought Green Parrot Pictures, an Irish video-enhancement firm.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll also see YouTube change their home page from the \u201cyou hunt for, find it\u201d approach to a set of channels.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re starting with 20 channels featuring hours of professionally produced original programming a week with more added \u2013 channels, content \u2013 as the year progresses.<\/p>\n<p>YouTube&#8217;s channels will also include new social-networking features, including the ability to identify video content that is popular with their circle of friends.<\/p>\n<p>Adults 18 + average 5 plus hours of TV viewing daily, according to Nielsen.<\/p>\n<p>Computer viewing still averages three-five minutes a day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Streamers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, that hasn\u2019t stopped folks from proclaiming that the rush to Netflix, Hulu, YouTube viewing is an obvious trend that people are cutting the cable and are moving to IP-based entertainment.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Frequency of Online Video Viewing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25522\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-4.jpg?resize=431%2C194\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-4.jpg 431w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-4-300x135.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 431px) 100vw, 431px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Movie Entertainment \u2013 <\/strong>Online users regularly go to entertainment locations like Hulu, Tremor Media, adap.tv, BrightRoll, Nabbr, AOL YouTube and other online video sites for their entertainment.\u00a0 In the younger demographics, these numbers continue to grow.<strong> Source \u2013 Lightspeed Research<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>True, you\u2019re watching more stuff online; but frankly, a lot of you are just watching more stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Norma looked on in disgust and said, <em>\u201cI *am* big. It&#8217;s the *pictures* that got small.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But online viewing has offered another opportunity for young and old, according to comScore.<\/p>\n<p>They reported online video viewing increased last December, compared to the year prior:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 88.6M daily viewers compared to 67.3<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 5.8B sessions compared to 5.1<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 201 videos per viewer compared to 187<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 14.2 hours compared to 12.7<\/p>\n<p>Tellywood finds the shift \u201cinteresting.\u201d \u00a0But they\u2019re more interested in the demographics and viewing trends.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Online Video Viewers, by Age<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25523\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=500%2C223\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-5.jpg 500w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-5-300x133.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Video Demographics \u2013 <\/strong>It is true there is an upswing in the number of people who turn first to the web to watch their video content when it is convenient to them; but broadcasters, cable companies, telcos and other content delivery options focus on the up-and-coming age groups\u2019 trends and projections on their future viewing habits\u2026that\u2019s where the money is.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8211; eMarketer<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They can handle today, but they\u2019ve got to be ready for your tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Norma advised them, <em>\u201cThey&#8217;ll love it everyplace.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>They spent a lot of sessions and hush-hush meetings discussing this anywhere, any device viewing phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why the mobile providers kept bragging about who had faster, more real 4G\/LTE.<\/p>\n<p>They talked about who would be first to meet the content consumer\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Mobile Gotcha\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They don\u2019t care what the video content is they just want the bandwidth usage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Global Mobile Data Traffic Growth\/Applications<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25524\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-6.jpg?resize=539%2C259\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-6.jpg 539w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-6-300x144.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 539px) 100vw, 539px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>More Video \u2013 <\/strong>While feature devices and smartphones do enable people to call one another, most of the bandwidth is consumed by video and to a lesser degree complex data content.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8211; Cisco<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Their problem is, they don\u2019t understand that people are only individuals, individuals who have phones, tablets, netbooks, notebooks, TVs.<\/p>\n<p>One \u2013 very reasonable \u2013 plan per person is mandatory.<\/p>\n<p>Not a cute little fine print agreement for every device you have in your viewing arsenal.<\/p>\n<p>YouTube doesn\u2019t care what the content was either, as long as folks are using their portal.<\/p>\n<p>The cable\u2019s and theaters\u2019 value are in their silos.\u00a0 \u00a0They\u2019re struggling with keeping eyeballs on their screens as people become accustomed to watching what they want, where they want, how they want.<\/p>\n<p>YouTube and the other online content producers\/providers can slice and dice content for viewers (and the advertisers).<\/p>\n<p>After five years of operating \u201cin the community\u2019s interest,\u201d \u00a0Google is in the mood for some serious payback on their YouTube investment.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t forget that content and the people are important.<\/p>\n<p>Even more important is the entertainment consumer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25525\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-7.jpg?resize=448%2C193\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-7.jpg 448w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-7-300x129.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just remember what Norma said, <em>\u201cWithout me, there wouldn&#8217;t be any Paramount studio.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p># # #<\/p>\n<p><strong>by:   G.A. &#8220;Andy&#8221;
