this is the conclusion that I have drawn from my career.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 <strong>Charlie Chaplin<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When you think about Hollywood \u2013 the motion picture industry, the first things that come to mind are usually a few hours of entertainment and the things movie bosses seem to tolerate.<\/p>\n<p>Take the way-too-visible sex, drugs and booze out of the picture and what do you have?<\/p>\n<p>A serious, profit-oriented business \u2026 A business, just like yours.<\/p>\n<p>Well, not <strong><em>exactly<\/em><\/strong> like your business.<\/p>\n<p>If any of your people pulled a tenth of the stuff you read about, your company \u201cstars\u201d would be out on their *** in the blink of an eye.<\/p>\n<p>Your management, stakeholders seem to understand that any key person\/star can be replaced.\u00a0 \u00a0The company usually survives and is often better in the long run.<\/p>\n<p>Hollywood has to work on that idea a little.<\/p>\n<p>But there are things your businesses can learn from Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>The industry may still have the aura of the Chaplin era, but glamour disappeared with celluloid and tape.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Streamlined Production<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are serious take-aways you can learn from Hollywood\u2019s inner workings\u2026just scratch the surface.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-23.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25819\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-23.jpg?resize=223%2C223\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-23.jpg 223w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-23-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Creative Techie \u2013 <\/strong>James Cameron is one of the few Hollywood producers who loves both creative and techie work.\u00a0 At NAB, he pushed for everyone to think in 3D terms.\u00a0 He pushed for faster film work (48-60 fps vs. standard 24 fps).\u00a0 He is introducing new digital cameras and technology.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Get past the few James Camerons and the bus loads of hopefuls and wannabes and it\u2019s an IT-centric business.<\/p>\n<p>They came to NAB with the same issues\/challenges\/questions:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 multi-platform content operations<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 how much of their enterprise, production they should take to the cloud<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0how they are going to leverage\/manage it<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 productivity, asset utilization<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 monetizing, securing their assets<\/p>\n<p>The Hollywood engine is money and specialists just like your organization&#8230;but with a difference.<\/p>\n<p>Studios have a relatively small core of full-time people.<\/p>\n<p>The real work is done by specialists \u2013 think engineering, design, manufacturing, and marketing &#8212; across town, across country, half-way around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>Raw green screen digital content is mated with digitally produced\/enhanced backgrounds.\u00a0 That goes to enhancement people to editing, authoring, music dubbing, special effects, and editing\/authoring&#8230;yada&#8230;yada&#8230;yada.<\/p>\n<p>The product develop-to-release cycle takes months.<\/p>\n<p>In the pre-Internet days, loosely associated clusters of specialists were located around town and were contracted to do specific parts of the product production before it was moved to another team of contractors who did their magic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Distributed Processes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Core ideas\/concepts were kept in-house; the rest were farmed out to specialists.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-33.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25820\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-33.jpg?resize=544%2C414\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-33.jpg 544w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-33-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 544px) 100vw, 544px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Virtual Organizations \u2013 <\/strong>Early on, Hollywood abandoned having all their work done under one roof.\u00a0 They focus on their IP and money.\u00a0 Everything else they contract out to improve their reaction time, maintain a degree of budget control.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 Ascent Media<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Movie production was a virtual organization before virtual was in vogue.<\/p>\n<p>The computerized work was stored on hard drives\u2026lots and lots of hard drives.<\/p>\n<p>Work was backed up, archived three to four times and then the working copy drive(s) went by messenger to the next group of specialists.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-43.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25821\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-43.jpg?resize=444%2C284\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-43.jpg 444w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-43-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Digital Content \u2013 <\/strong>When Hollywood shifted to digital production, they gobbled hard drives like Tums.\u00a0 All of the raw video is saved and backed up.\u00a0 Every step of production is saved and backed up.\u00a0 Initially, drive-based content was physically moved from one specialist to another (sneaker net).\u00a0 Today, it is sent almost instantly across town, around the globe over the Internet.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If they were across the country or half-way around the globe, FedEx handled the content production-in-process delivery task.<\/p>\n<p>But like your business, the process was still linear and manageable.<\/p>\n<p>The movie production moved down the production line.<\/p>\n<p>The difference is they are paranoid (anal almost) that none of their data will be lost.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-53.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25822\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-53.jpg?resize=526%2C201\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-53.jpg 526w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-53-300x114.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 526px) 100vw, 526px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Linear Process \u2013 <\/strong>The movie production process looks pretty much like your firm\u2019s process \u2013 each stage identified, carried out.\u00a0 The difference is that the motion picture industry backs up and archives every one and zero\u2026they don\u2019t want to lose anything.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8212; Aspera<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>With cloud production, people in Culver City work with people in the old garment district of NYC with specialists in Wellington, NZ, an FX team in Ottawa, the post group in Belfast,\u00a0 the digital musicians in Chicago and the dubbing experts in New Delhi with\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pipe Overload<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The biggest challenge has been cramming all that digital content across the Internet efficiently and reliably.<\/p>\n<p>Solutions that have been used include:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lossy\/lossless compression \u2013 not ideal when dealing with raw content that needed to be kept in the highest quality possible<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dedicated T1 pipes \u2013 expensive<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hardware\/software data tunnels \u2013 expensive, often proprietary solutions that required new (expensive) equipment<\/p>\n<p>A new answer we saw at NAB uses existing hardware\/software so studios don\u2019t have a huge new investment, don\u2019t have to change their way of doing business.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-82.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25825\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-82.jpg?resize=500%2C183\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-82.jpg 500w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-82-300x109.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>High-speed Tunnel \u2013 <\/strong>Nuvel\u2019s new data tunnel technology is supposed to deliver up to 150x faster data throughput performance for users.\u00a0 This can speed the production process and reduce costs for almost any organization, but it can be a huge solution for Hollywood whose total product is digital entertainment.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8211; Nuvel<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Nuvel data tunnel meets content industry\u2019s needs and can handle multiple client data streams simultaneously.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s important now for their production processes and even more important since they have a range of distribution channels \u2013 theaters, broadcasters, consumer TVs\/tablets\/computers\/ smartphones.<\/p>\n<p>Dropping right into their highly complex, widely distributed workflow system should provide wider, more accurate collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>Less time in the pipe (speeds data transfer up to 150X) should mean cost savings and better asset protection \u2013 less time in the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>Yesteryear\u2019s gold copies still exist in a locked, humidity-controlled room in NYC or Culver City, but even those are being digitized and stored \u201cin the cloud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It allows Hollywood to repurpose, reissue (recycle) old ideas for a nostalgic or younger audience who never saw them the first time.<\/p>\n<p>In many instances, the \u201cauthorized\u201d final product and all of the bits\/pieces only exist in cloud storage farms at EMC, IBM, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Google.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-91.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25826\" title=\"Untitled-9\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-91.jpg?resize=266%2C242\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Cloud Storage \u2013 <\/strong>It\u2019s almost cute the way cloud computing, cloud storage advocates create cute puffy clouds to show you where the work is done, where your stuff sits.\u00a0 But in reality, those clouds sit in huge buildings that house vast numbers of storage devices around the country, around the globe.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8211; Google<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The stuff is spread across multiple storage farms and magically reassembled when it\u2019s requested.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also a cost-effective solution for small, Indie producers.<\/p>\n<p>Their backup, archiving, availability is pretty good\u2026getting better<\/p>\n<p>The farmers also focus a lot more attention on security which means they usually see an attempted or true breach before too much damage is done.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Green Industry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like other business, IT organizations love to point out how green they are even as they provide you the entertainment you want, when you want it, in the format you need for the device you\u2019re using right now.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, that really means they (and you) are simply shifting their \u201ccarbon footprint\u201d from their house to the storage farm\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, that works!<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s tough to solve the world\u2019s problems when they have to keep everyone in the food chain happy:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Theater folks want first crack at the movies for as long as possible<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cable silos want them early so they can justify keeping you attached<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mobile phone people want them to pad your phone bill<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You want\/expect your entertainment available 24&#215;7 on the device you\u2019re looking at\u2026regardless of the shape\/size<\/p>\n<p>Sound familiar?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe there are some business lessons we can learn from Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re virtual, they\u2019re cloud-centric, they seem to have fun, they\u2019re profitable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-101.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25827\" title=\"Untitled-10\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-101.jpg?resize=359%2C217\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-101.jpg 359w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-101-300x181.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Charlie said, <em>\u201cLaughter is the tonic, the relief, the surcease for pain.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p># # #<\/p>\n<p><strong>by:   G.A. &#8220;Andy&#8221;
