That should ensure a fuselage integrity while while maintaining power-to-weight ratio.\u201d <\/em>\u2013 <em>\u201c<strong>Iron Man,\u201d<\/strong><\/em><strong> Paramount, 2008<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After three days immersed in technical\/business sessions at this year\u2019s Flash Memory Summit (FMS), we\u2019re absolutely convinced we live and work in an RDF (reality distortion field).<\/p>\n<p>You know, where the impossible is so distorted that you honestly believe it\u2019s possible.<\/p>\n<p>For example, solid-state storage is absolutely replacing every other form of storage media \u2026 <strong><em>now!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As William Riva said, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>All right, and that&#8217;s what we&#8217;re trying to do, but &#8230; honestly, it&#8217;s impossible.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Flash and solid-state storage is very good&#8211;fantastic even, but there are a few issues to overcome:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s expensive \u2013 10x the price of a hard drive<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Too many inexperienced people have jumped into the market \u2013 there are now about 200 \u201cfirms\u201d selling the stuff, probably 2\/3 of them repacking third-tier chips (rejects) and selling them at bargain basement prices<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 All of the storage producers combined \u2013 HD, flash, tape, optical \u2013 can\u2019t make enough storage stuff to keep pace with the volume of content we create<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Not all content has the same value and not all content needs to be stored on the fastest medium we currently have available<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s expensive<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>First, there\u2019s the volume issue:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Every minute, 72 hours of video go to YouTube<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Every hour, enough information is consumed by Internet traffic to fill 7M DVDs<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Every day, 247 billion emails are sent<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Facebook handles 40 billion photos for you and your close personal friends<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Internet traffic is growing so fast that by next year, it will be 667 Exabytes (EB)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1GB of data produces 1 Petabyte (PB) of transient, background data<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32006\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-23.jpg?resize=211%2C227\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Content Growth <em>\u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>Every minute of the day, content is created on smartphones and tablets as well as systems around the globe and sent to businesses, individuals and social sites. The ever-increasing volume keeps the demand for storage humming.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, that deafening sucking noise is content being created that needs to be stored somewhere if it is going to be used, accessed \u2026 somewhere, sometime!<\/p>\n<p>Rhodey commented, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>No, you see, this isn&#8217;t a game.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Exactly how much content are we talking about?<\/p>\n<p>Lots!<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32007\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-33.jpg?resize=300%2C290\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>The Next Big Number \u2013 <\/strong><em>People used to think that a Terabyte was a big number, but that has quickly moved to Petabytes and beyond. Data doubles every two years and a single Gigabyte of stored data creates a Petabyte of shadow data. By 2015, we will be creating, replicating, storing nearly eight Zettabytes of data.<\/em> <strong>Source \u2013 IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Agent Coulson looked at the numbers and said confidently, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>This isn&#8217;t my first rodeo, Mr. Stark.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yeah, we know their stuff is garbage (even in your business) and yours is really important; but still we\u2019re talking a ton of storage that is needed at home, on the road, at the office.<\/p>\n<p>We were satisfied without flash until we got our smartphone and then our iPad.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly we realized all of our devices should fire up and be ready the nanosecond we turned them on\u2026<strong><em>BAM!!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tony Stark saw the difference and commented, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Jarvis&#8230; sometimes you gotta run before you can walk.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yes, 32GB of flash in our phone and 64GB in our iPad made that speed possible.<\/p>\n<p>Our notebook computer?<\/p>\n<p>Dog slow \u2026 a measly four hours of battery life \u2026 and heavy.<\/p>\n<p>But gawd, it\u2019s got storage capacity to burn \u2013 1TB.<\/p>\n<p>Get a MacBook Air like our kids want us to get and half that capacity means dipping into their college funds.<\/p>\n<p>Our alternative was a fast, light ultrabook with 240GB SSD \u2013 fast, long battery life, reasonable price.<\/p>\n<p>For the extra storage of stuff, we\u2019d get a 1TB personal cloud (you know, light, compact, bus-driven external HD) like OWC\u2019s On-The-Go Pro.<\/p>\n<p>Need more storage, forgot something?<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll connect to our home 8TB or office server and grab what we need.<\/p>\n<p>If we have to, we\u2019ll cautiously use the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>But at FMS, Objective Analysis\u2019 Jim Handy told us that a majority of the ultrabooks that ship this coming year will be with hybrid drives.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32008\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-43.jpg?resize=434%2C240\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-43.jpg 434w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-43-300x165.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Ultrabook Flash <em>\u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>As portable system manufacturers moved to slimmer, lighter notebooks and now ultrabooks, the demand for PC SSD was initially high. Today, the average SSD capacity has dropped but is slowly rising again as people understand there is data that must be immediately available while other data can be accessed from external storage sources, including the cloud.<\/em> <strong>Source \u2013 Objective Analysis<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A hybrid HD, simply described as SSD on the front-end of a HD, will give you much better boot-up and access times.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s probably going to be a good bridge answer for lots of folks because we\u2019ve never heard of anyone going up to a computer tech and say, <em>\u201cI\u2019ve got too much storage capacity in my system. Would you put a smaller capacity drive in?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Doesn\u2019t happen!<\/p>\n<p>But we just checked our notebook drive and after stripping out all of the bloatware \u2013 trials loaded on the drive to \u201chelp\u201d you, we were only using 90GB of a 500GB drive.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re just saying\u2026<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the sex-appeal products that are driving all the buzz for more flash, more SSD, you know smartphones, tablets, SSD for computers.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32009\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-53.jpg?resize=424%2C261\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-53.jpg 424w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-53-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 424px) 100vw, 424px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Solid Growth \u2013 <\/strong><em>Today\u2019s mobile solutions \u2013 smartphones, tablets, notebooks\/ultrabooks \u2013 have created a huge demand for semiconductor storage solutions. Even in emerging countries, people are moving from feature phones to smartphones where they are becoming their sole computing\/communications solutions.<\/em> <strong>Source \u2013 Gartner<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And yes, it\u2019s a huge market.<\/p>\n<p>It has also been a contributing factor for a huge noise market \u2013 the cloud.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32010\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-63.jpg?resize=373%2C241\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-63.jpg 373w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-63-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 373px) 100vw, 373px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Storage Shift \u2013 <\/strong><em>While only about 25 percent of consumers use the cloud for storage today, the volume of content placed and available in the cloud will grow to 61 percent in the next two years. Private and public clouds and social media will drive the demand for storage of all types \u2013 including archiving \u2013 in the years ahead.<\/em> <strong>Source \u2013 IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The cloud is a little like the magic mushroom and little blue pill of yesteryear.<\/p>\n<p>Great vision, great feeling but eventually your stuff comes down to rest and it\u2019s in someone\u2019s huge storage server farm \u2026 not floating up there to admire, enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, some idiot or malicious person can leave the backdoor open and bad guys\/gals can come in and have their way with your data.<\/p>\n<p>But the folks who offer the service are getting better with their security and we\u2019re all getting a little less paranoid about our need for absolute security \u2026 face it, most people aren\u2019t really interested in your Tweets and stuff.<\/p>\n<p>The big news at FMS though was about all of the advances being made in enterprise SSD, because suddenly companies see there\u2019s a profitable use of their data.<\/p>\n<p>Business use (large and small) of SSD is growing in leaps and bounds because organizations are finding there is a lot of value in the big data (all your clicks, visits) they\u2019ve been accumulating.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32011\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-73.jpg?resize=280%2C298\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Performance, Price \u2013 <\/strong><em>Businesses will balance their need for rapid response times with the high cost of SSD (compared to HDs) and will prioritize applications and data with mission-critical applications edging up SSD unit requirements.<\/em> <strong>Source \u2013 Gartner<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>SSD is ideal when response time (low latency) and performance (IOPs \u2013 input\/output operations per second) are more important than raw capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, the cost is still 10X that of HDs but businesses can see a solid return on their investment when they have a data environment that requires intensive random read\/write and they need to boost performance and more efficiently manage and use their data.<\/p>\n<p>Even our son, who swears we\u2019re so middle ages for having hard drives on all of our current systems, uses a combination of SSD\/HD for his not-for-profit (no it wasn\u2019t planned that way) artistserver.com web site for indie musicians, music lovers.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, he\u2019d love to use nothing but SSD; but even for him, there\u2019s a cost that has to be considered.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32012\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-83.jpg?resize=525%2C294\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-83.jpg 525w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-83-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Enterprise Picture \u2013 <\/strong><em>Organizations will balance the storage device used with the volume of IOs needed for tasks. Those with heavy performance demands will reside on SSD, while those with fewer IOs will be move to higher-capacity, more economic HDs.<\/em> <strong>Source \u2013 IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s why businesses \u2013 including cloud services \u2013 have to balance the cost, performance and ROI of their storage.<\/p>\n<p>Oh yeah, there\u2019s another part of the equation that has to be figured in \u2026 available product.<\/p>\n<p>Remember the Zettabytes figure earlier?<\/p>\n<p>There just isn\u2019t enough solid-state storage available.<\/p>\n<p>It costs about $6B for a single solid-state production line and takes two years to come online!<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not chump change, especially when HD folks keep pumping out bigger and bigger drives at lower and lower costs.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32013\" title=\"Untitled-9\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-91.jpg?resize=507%2C362\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-91.jpg 507w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-91-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 507px) 100vw, 507px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Race to Bottom \u2013 <\/strong><em>With each passing year, storage device manufacturers focus on improving production yields and increasing device capacity, while lowering the price to the end user. Despite steady improvements in all of these areas, memory storage devices continue to be 10X more expensive than hard drive storage.<\/em> <strong>Source \u2013 Ed Grochowski<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The \u201cmature\u201d HD industry now has three drive manufacturers left after the blood-letting (consolidation) and about 50 really good (yes, there are dogs\/cats out there) packed solution providers.<\/p>\n<p>Both technologies combined can\u2019t meet our insatiable need for storage and even tape and optical are being used for storing the stuff you never use but just don\u2019t want to throw away \u2013 archiving.<\/p>\n<p>Flash for the \u201cgotta have\u201d consumer devices is a must because we just expect immediate response.<\/p>\n<p>But there is a place for all the other storage devices because there are issues that have to be worked out.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32014\" title=\"Untitled-10\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-101.jpg?resize=550%2C341\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-101.jpg 550w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-101-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Booming Business \u2013 <\/strong><em>Business demand for storage \u2013 by IT departments and cloud deployments \u2013 shows no sign of easing up. Enterprises are learning how to balance the performance and capacity requirements to ensure the most valuable applications can be quickly accessed from SSD, while less time intensive applications can reside on HDs.<\/em> <strong>Source \u2013 Seagate<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Solid-state is great, but as Tony Stark explained, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Clearly.
