Then, they turn around and offer all the new, sexy infotainment gadgets.<\/span> Distractions \u2013 <\/span><\/i><\/b>According to research, there are plenty of things a driver can do to be distracted from watching the traffic around him\/her. AT&T found that while messages have been targeted at teen drivers to not call or text, it is really adults who are the major offenders. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/b>The cellphone\/smartphone in the car is bad enough.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I can chew gum, walk and talk all at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I can drive, chew gum, talk at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n But that\u2019s about it.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n O.K., if I\u2019m driving and receive a call I can push the button and answer the phone using the car\u2019s mike\/speakers.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I suppose I could use my Bluetooth to give a voice request to place a call; but that would mean I\u2019d have to read the manual and jeezz, that sounds like homework.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n When I was in the military, I had to take a very rigorous defensive driving course that would allow me to drive with one hand or no hands (knees) and do \u201cother\u201d things with my hands.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n That was then \u2026 this is now.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Thinking Time<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n Frankly, I think of my time in the car as \u201cme time.\u201d You know, the time you have totally to yourself\u00a0 <\/span>just to think about business\/home issues, problems and wondering what the idiot in the next car is going to do.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Our kids can walk, talk, text, call and listen to their music \u2026 all at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n But they\u2019re digital natives, so that\u2019s O.K.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n While most of the don\u2019t call\/text drive messages are aimed at kids, it turns out adults are the biggest culprits.<\/p>\n According to an AT&T survey, 49 percent of the adults admitted to texting and 70 percent to calling, even though they knew it was dangerous.<\/p>\n So-called \u201cdistracted driving\u201d laws sorta\u2019, kinda\u2019 work.<\/p>\n According to a study in the American Economic Journal: Applied <\/i>Economics, reduction of calling\/texting was short-lived and only with strict enforcement were accidents\/deaths lowered.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n The key to efficacy seems to be strong laws against calling\/texting\/driving and parental guidance.<\/p>\n The State of Virginia, for example, lets police ticket you for the infraction which could be a suspension of your license and\/or $500 fine.<\/p>\n As Optimus Prime noted, \u201cSometimes even the wisest of man or machine can make an error.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n That\u2019s why we have a firm rule in our house everyone has to live by \u2013 you don\u2019t call\/text while driving.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The kids agreed.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Just to take temptation off the plate there\u2019s an app for that.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span> Calling, Texting \u2013 <\/span><\/i><\/b>Transportation officials and wireless carriers are trying to encourage people not to text\/call while driving. Strict laws, aggressively enforced, appear to help folks change their habits. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n We use Global Mobile Alert\u2019s \u201cPull Over to Text\u201d app but there are lots of them available.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Talk to Me<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n I have voice direction GPS on my smartphone and in the car that I use occasionally.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n But even though she has a sweet voice, there\u2019s just something about the way she corrects me, \u201cNice going, stupid. You missed the corner. Now turn around and turn when I tell you or boy, will you be sorry!\u201d<\/i>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Even the National Safety Council warns, \u201cThere is no research or evidence that indicates voice-activated technologies eliminate or even reduce the distraction to the drivers\u2019 mind.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n But unless they issue a gag order, I\u2019ll probably continue listening to her insult me.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I like good, easy listening music when I drive and have a great quadraphonic 10-speaker tunable bass\/treble stereo in the car.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Stations are preprogrammed and that\u2019s enough.<\/span><\/p>\n Of course, Sweeps had to comment, \u201c<\/i><\/span>This is blowing out my audio sensors! At the same time, studies show that kids learn best by example. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I no longer go to a mechanic when there\u2019s an issue with the car \u2026 I go to a technician.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Mind of Its Own<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n In-car electronics have become increasingly sophisticated;<\/span> and to make sure you are entertained and work 100+ percent of the time, they\u2019re adding infotainment centers.<\/span><\/p>\n And the infotainment center has invited a whole new set of apps you can get for free or buy and download.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Manufacturers and service engineers say the hardware itself is really pretty bulletproof and very robust and reliable.<\/span><\/p>\n Of course \u2026 it\u2019s always a software problem.<\/span><\/p>\n Not really. Most of the manufacturers and dealers say it\u2019s the person on this side of the screen just trying to figure out what in the heck he\/she did or didn\u2019t do and how to undo it.<\/span><\/p>\n Megatron interrupted and said, \u201c<\/i><\/span>Your knowledge is only overshadowed by your stupidity!\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n That\u2019s why GM and most of the car manufacturers have opened service technician colleges to not only troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues but also train the customer. These guys\/gals help you understand how the car is supposed to operate and get you familiar with all the systems\/apps.<\/span><\/p>\n Of course, two days after you leave the lot, you\u2019ve forgotten 80-90 percent of the information so you begin searching \u2026 while driving.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n It\u2019s great there\u2019s now an iBeetle with a docking station and applications that just make you want to stay in the car.<\/span><\/p>\n Of course, GM, Audi and the others are doing things like this \u2013 adding Siri voice assistance, hands-free communications\/multimedia services, voice-to-text translation, you name it \u2026 it\u2019ll all be there.<\/span><\/p>\n That\u2019s a lotta\u2019 work just to keep you in your car.<\/span><\/p>\n It doesn\u2019t really matter that voice-activated systems are no better than manual ones, according to a recent Texas A&M study.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n They found distraction was distraction and, in fact, the voice approach gave folks a false sense of security that wasn\u2019t really there.<\/span><\/p>\n But then, it never has been!<\/span><\/p>\n Accident Analysis<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n That\u2019s probably why the transportation folks have said that beginning next year, cars would have to come with a blackbox like on a plane so they\u2019ll be able to study what happened.<\/span><\/p>\n Like I really care if that happens because fer gawd sake I\u2019m dead! \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n More than You Need \u2013 <\/span><\/i><\/b>Consumer electronics firms and the auto industry are working closely together to deliver car owners with all the news, information, entertainment and connectivity that they have at home or in the office.
