Here is the first view we get of X-G510.

The 1.8 meter braided cable on the X-G510 is a standard length cable. We would have liked the cable to be a little longer but for most it will do the job.

On the next page we will see if Genius can deliver a good gaming mouse.

At first glance, the Genius X-G510 doesn’t have a huge “wow” factor to it. The focal point of the mouse is definitely the cracked LED design. As soon as we plugged in the X-G510 it lit up nicely and just worked.

A rubber finish on the X-G510 gives it a nice grip and comfortable feel. The left side of the mouse has the Genius branding, but other than that the two sides are nearly identical.

Both sides of the mouse also feature a customizable button and an ergonomic curve. These buttons feel a little flimsy but they do the job. Accessing the buttons on the side can also require some contortion of your fingers if your hands are bigger.

The mouse measures 75 x 118 x39 mm, making the X-G510 a mouse that might be too small or just right depending on how big your hand is.

We feel that the X-G510 feels comfortable in either hand and the design makes even prolonged usage comfortable.

The sensor on the bottom of the mouse has a max DPI of 2000 and a max polling rate of 1000mhz. On surfaces like our wooden desk, mouse pad, and a plain white piece of paper the sensor always worked.

The button on top of the X-G510 controls the DPI level of the mouse by default, but it can be customized. The software will pop up the level that is currently being used with every press.

The top of the mouse also features a clickable scroll wheel, which can also be customized. The scroll wheel on the X-G510 is very accurate and easy to use with no over/under scrolling issues.

Out of the box, our mouse looked like it had a defect on the rubber material as shown below. The “defect” was just some sort of stain that a simple wipe removed.

We had our fears moving forward that the mouse would be prone to catching any sweat or type of residue left over from use. The material performed well, however, and kept itself as clean as you would expect from a mouse.

The main attraction of the mouse is also the bright blue lightning-like design. This LED-powered design powers on as soon as the mouse is plugged in. With the software installed, the user has a choice of different lighting options for the X-G510’s lightning design.

Let’s take a look at the software for the X-G510 on the next page.

Genius includes a disc containing the software for the X-G510 or it can be downloaded from their site. As shown above the software features three tabs: Main Control, Mange Macro, and Advanced Setting.

Main Control

The program will launch in the Main Control tab by default. Here we can customize the 7 different “buttons” on the Genius X-G510 to many different functions. We say 7 because the left button on the mouse must remain the left click function- a smart idea as some might configure the mouse incorrectly.

The two buttons featured on the left and right side respectively, are where most will input some customization.

As an example, the program could allow the left button to become your copy button and the right will be the paste.

We feel like the X-G510 could be vastly improved by adding at least two more side buttons. This would be much more convenient for the user.

The software also allows you to set 3 profiles, which may be customized to your exact needs.

The LED light options can also be customized as shown in the photo above. You can configure the pulse speed or the intensity of the light. We would have loved to able to change the blue to some other color.

Manage Macro

A macro, in short, is a set of predefined commands or key presses that the user creates. The possibilities are endless, but this function is usually used by gamers. The X-G510 software includes a Manage Macro tab where you can create, import, export, set a delay and more.

Genius also included some basic and additional functions in the Manage Macro section of the software as shown below.

Advanced Setting(s)

A gem in the software is the Advanced setting tab. Here we can do things like increase the polling rate to 1000mhz. If you need the sensor on the X-G510 to be more accurate there is an option to “enable advanced sensitivity” for the mouse.

When we were playing games like Fallout: New Vegas, the mouse performed well. There were times when the mouse felt like it was just a tiny bit “off” and increasing the DPI and polling rate of the mouse fixed that off feeling instantly.

Final Thoughts

For around $30 dollars, we weren’t expecting much from the X-G510. Genius has surprised us in the past with more bang for your buck products and their experience in this field made us curious about the Genius X-G510 Optical Gaming Mouse.

While the buttons felt flimsy they still performed over the course of our testing. We were pleasantly surprised at how well the mouse performed even in intense FPS games or for regular use. The mouse could have benefited from a couple more buttons on the sides.

The ergonomic design of the mouse was comfortable and the identical sides made it ideal even for the often forgotten left-handed user.

The software has a bevy of options for the user to customize the X-G510. One thing Genius could have added for the X-G510 for the mouse and software were more color options for the LED’s.

Genius hit the mark with X-G510. The mouse is inexpensive compared to just about any high-end mouse and it performs just as well. It lacks some buttons, fancier looks – and some might think size – but the X-G510 may be the perfect mouse the gamer on a budget who isn’t willing to sacrifice precision and comfort.

ABT awards the Genius X-G510 the Great Value award.

Pros

-Cheap price, available for about $30

-The rubber finish of the X-G510 gives it a nice grip

-Ergonomic and ambidextrous design

–Works on all surfaces

Cons

-Not enough buttons

-Only one color option

-Size may be an issue

Please join us in our Forums

Like us on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter

For the latest updates from ABT, please join our RSS News Feed Join our Distributed Computing teams

Folding@Home – Team AlienBabelTech – 164304

SETI@Home – Team AlienBabelTech – 138705

World Community Grid – Team AlienBabelTech

Although the company behind Genius was established 30 years ago in Taiwan, it wasn’t until recently that they began to try to establish themselves in America.
