Genius is the company responsible for bringing the world\u2019s first ring style presenter<\/a> to market. Their products are a nice mix of innovation and quality that we at ABT have come to enjoy. One of their most recent products is the stylish and impressive\u00a0Ring Pointer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Genius has made many of these Ring Style devices in the past and the lineup has always been functional and innovative. This new Ring Pointer maintains the concept behind the original ring style presenter from Genius: a small and lightweight ring for the professional presenter.<\/p>\n

The Genius Ring Style lineup has lacked a higher standard for style in the past. The circular Ring Pointer\u00a0is finally a sleek and modern ring style device from Genius.\u00a0 However, is it just as functional and innovative as the others?<\/p>\n

Before we expand on the Ring Pointer\u00a0lets run down the specifications and open the packaging.<\/p>\n

The simple and transparent packaging is pretty standard for the past iterations of ring style presenters from Genius. For around $36, <\/a>the\u00a0Ring Pointer has a lot of potential.<\/p>\n

In the packaging of the Ring Pointer, Genius has included a carrying pouch, USB charging cable, an instruction manual, the 2.4GHZ wireless receiver, and\u00a0Ring Pointer.<\/p>\n

The Ring Pointer\u00a0itself is made of a nice black and brushed aluminum-like surface. The device itself exudes elegance and style. This made us wish that other Genius products like the Ring Mouse would have a similar look. The Ring Pointer\u00a0certainly wins in the looks department.<\/p>\n

As we see below, the Ring Pointer\u00a0has a total of 5 buttons: Play\/ESC, previous and next page, the laser pointer, blank page\/power for the ring presenter. There is no real \u201csoftware\u201d for the Ring Pointer\u00a0to customize the buttons on the presenter, but a user may change its options in Windows.<\/p>\n

The Ring Pointer\u2019s 2.4GHZ wireless receiver is extremely easy to use – simply plugging in the device will make the Ring Pointer\u00a0work.\u00a0 The Ring Pointer\u2019s lithium-ion battery may be charged with an included micro-USB cable.<\/p>\n

There is also a blue LED battery indicator on the Ring Pointer\u00a0that will flash when the device needs charging. The laser pointer on the device will work at a distance of up to 10 meters.<\/p>\n

A Closer Look at the\u00a0Ring Pointer<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

To us, the most disappointing part of the Ring Pointer\u00a0is the lack of mouse capabilities that the Ring Mouse<\/a> has. At first, the Genius Ring Pointer\u00a0looked like it has the same mouse functionality that Ring Mouse did with the center button.<\/p>\n

The Ring Pointer\u00a0is just that – a presenter, and most will do just fine with the product. It works flawlessly and with a long-enough range that most teachers and presenters will have no trouble using it.<\/p>\n

An important part of a device like the Ring Pointer\u00a0is comfort for the user. The device wraps around your finger with a \u201cnatural rubber ring.\u201d The rubber on the presenter did wrap around our finger nicely and never felt too tight or awkward. The device felt natural after only a couple of minutes of use.<\/p>\n

The front of the Ring Pointer\u00a0houses the charging port that is accessed by pulling back a rubber cover. The cover will always stay attached to the device in a slot just under the micro-USB charging port.\u00a0 The front is also the location of the laser pointer on the device.<\/p>\n

As mentioned before, the top of the device features a blue LED indicator light that will flash when the battery is low. When the device is being charged, the blue LED will also shine.<\/p>\n

Using the\u00a0Ring Pointer<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Comfort and simplicity are integral to the Ring Pointer. The device is extremely easy to setup and use to the point where even the most inexperienced presenter may pick it up rather quickly.<\/p>\n

In PowerPoint, the Ring Pointer\u00a0works flawlessly. The previous\/forward buttons will cycle through slides.\u00a0 The play\/esc button works to begin a presentation or to exit a presentation in full-screen mode, while the middle \u201cblank\u201d button is the same as pressing the \u201cb\u201d button on a keyboard, and will overlay a black page on the current slide.<\/p>\n

The last button is the laser function. The laser worked as intended in a well-lit room at up to 10 meters.\u00a0\u00a0 Beyond ten meters, the laser would start to fade considerably. In a dark room, the results were good and the laser pointer would work well into the 15-20 ft range.<\/p>\n

The main program most will use the Ring Pointer\u00a0for is PowerPoint, but it does have function outside of PowerPoint.<\/p>\n

The play\/esc button will work as F5\/refresh, previous\/forward buttons will function as page up\/down, and the \u201cblank\u201d page button will simply insert the letter \u201cb\u201d on the screen. The Ring Pointer\u00a0doesn\u2019t offer much outside of PowerPoint, but what it does do, it does without a hitch.<\/p>\n

Pictured above is the 2.4GHZ wireless receiver and included charging cable. The cable, receiver and Ring Pointer\u00a0are all very small in size and can easily be transported in the pouch.<\/p>\n

Genius has also included a \u201cnotch\u201d in the rubber ring of the device that holds the receiver perfectly. This is the perfect solution to prevent the user from losing the receiver and a nice design addition by Genius.<\/p>\n

Charging the device is easy and keeping track of the devices battery life is made easier with the flashing indicator. On one charge the device would last well past the 30 hour mark with light use and around 7 hours with heavy and constant use.<\/p>\n

The first thing to fail before a lost charge is the laser pointer as it requires a certain amount of energy to use. The device surprised us by charging rather rapidly as well. Out of the box, we charged it for about 30 minutes and it lasted well into the next day without even indicating a need for a charge.<\/p>\n

Final Thoughts<\/strong><\/p>\n

Genius has created a wonderful ring pointer device with the Ring Pointer. The device is perfect for teachers, business workers, and many other professionals who use PowerPoint. The Ring Pointer\u00a0is comfortable and the sleek design makes it look more expensive than it is.<\/p>\n

The device is extremely easy to set up and use and it maintains functionality over a very decent wireless range. The battery life is extremely good, and if the device is close to dying, even a quick charge will give you a lot more additional battery life.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the only negative of this device is a lack of mouse functionality, and no accompanying software.<\/p>\n

At $36<\/a> the Ring Pointer\u00a0is $10 cheaper than the Ring Mouse which is about $46 on Amazon<\/a>. A difference that is really negligible for the professional looking for a permanent solution to their needs.<\/p>\n

At the current price, the Ring Pointer\u00a0is just too expensive to justify the choice over the Ring Mouse. Genius needs to lower the Ring Pointer\u00a0to at least $25 or so.<\/p>\n

The Ring Pointer\u00a0functions flawlessly in PowerPoint but we would have loved to change the buttons to a custom layout. Currently, the user would have to fiddle with Windows in order to customize the\u00a0Ring Pointerr\u2019s button functions.<\/p>\n

Regardless of the possible future improvements, the device is perfect for presenting. The looks, comfort, and simple design choice make the Ring Pointer\u00a0one of the best possible laser pointers to buy for PowerPoint. While this device would have been the perfect redesign for the Ring Mouse, the Ring Pointer\u00a0is still an impressive device.<\/p>\n

We award the Genius Ring Pointer\u00a0with the ABT “Recommended Award” and we recommend it for those looking for a ring pointer with the basic PowerPoint functionality.<\/p>\n
