ATI’s CrossFire multi-GPU technology first\u00a0began with their X800 series on the Intel platform with ATi’s own brand of chipset before AMD acquired them.\u00a0\u00a0 Since then, AMD has allowed CrossFire and their evolving \u00a0CrossFireX standards to be supported by Intel chipsets. The only current chipset platform that doesn’t support CrossFire is Nvidia’s nForce series –\u00a0until now, that is.<\/p>\n
According to hardware-aktuell.com<\/a>, a German language website, ASRock devised a BIOS for its nForce 740i based N7AD-SLi motherboard that enables support for CrossFire.\u00a0 The company is using N7AD-SLi, based on Nvidia’s nforce 740i SLi chipset, flashed with an altered BIOS.\u00a0 AMD’s Catalyst drivers were able to detect the motherboard as a qualified platform and enabled CrossFire between two\u00a0ATi Radeon GPUs.\u00a0\u00a0ASRock is reportedly\u00a0writing similar BIOS firmware for several other motherboards they make as they want to enable CrossFire and CrossFireX for\u00a0their other nForce motherboards.<\/p>\n A\u00a0demonstration\u00a0in Booth Hall 21, Stand C40 at CeBIT 2009, showed two 9600GT\u00a0video cards running\u00a0in\u00a0SLi configuration on\u00a0ASRock’s nForce 740i motherboard.\u00a0\u00a0Then out with the 9600GTs and\u00a0in\u00a0went two ATi HD4850 video cards.\u00a0 AMD’s Catalyst drivers that\u00a0were installed enabled CrossFireX.\u00a0 They even\u00a0demonstrated multi-GPU scaling with 3DMark06.\u00a0<\/p>\n As yet, there is no comment from Nvidia.\u00a0 This is quite an interesting development and we wonder what their response will be.\u00a0 Stay tuned.<\/p>\n Please join us in our Forums<\/a><\/p>\n Follow us on Twitter<\/a><\/p>\n\n
