We will benchmark using the reference version of the GTX 770 and a reference EVGA GTX 780. We will also bench our VisionTek HD 7970, clocked at reference and at GHz Edition speeds.\u00a0 We need to ask, <em> is <\/em><em>a GTX 770 2GB\u00a0 video card<\/em><em> worth $30 more than a 3GB VisionTek R9 280X?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The VisionTek R9 280X versus the reference and GHz Edition HD 7970 versus the reference GTX 770, and overclocked versus the reference GTX 780<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For this evaluation, you will see us pit the VisionTek R9 280X against the reference and GHz Edition HD 7970, and against the reference GTX 770 at stock clocks. We are also going to compare with the EVGA reference GTX 780 to see how well the overclocked VisionTek 280X Radeon does. For this evaluation, we are benching 31 modern games and 4 synthetic benchmarks at 1920&#215;1080 and 2560&#215;1600 resolutions.<\/p>\n<p>Since we do not want any chance of our CPU &#8220;bottlenecking&#8221; our graphics, we are testing all of our graphics cards by using our Ivy Bridge Intel Core <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=30448\">i7-3770K<\/a> at 4.50GHz, 16 GB Kingston <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/kingston-beast\/\">&#8220;Beast&#8221; HyperX<\/a> DDR3 at 2133MHz, and an <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=31216\">EVGA Z77<\/a> FTW motherboard. It emphasizes 3GB of GDDR5 memory, intelligent overclocking, and it also mentions VisionTek&#8217;s lifetime warranty and US &#8220;Tek&#8221; support.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On the back of the box, Ultra-HD, Performance scaling, low idle state and ready for Compute are emphasized. VisionTek offers a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser provided that they register their new R9 280X within 30 days of purchase, otherwise it is one year.<a has a good looking design and it uses two cooling fans that do a great job of keeping the GPU cool. \u00a0 Please not that the cooling is not designed for exhausting hot air out of the PC, and this open design is not often chosen for CrossFire setups unless there is excellent case cooling and a space between the cards.<a Even when our settings are &#8220;default&#8221;, we always move the PowerTune Slider as far to the right as it will go &#8211; to +20% in most cases &#8211; so the card is not throttled.<\/p>\n<p>We were able to add an additional 85MHz over the reference R9 280X base clock of 1000MHz to reach 1085MHz stably.\u00a0 On top of the core overclock, we were able to add 125MHz to reach 1625MHz on the memory.<\/p>\n<p>We did not adjust the VisionTek R9 280X&#8217; voltage. Temperatures were never an issue and the fan profile remained at stock. Temperatures remained in the low 70sC during benching and only hit the mid-80C when we overclocked it as far as we could go without adjusting the voltage nor fan profile.\u00a0 VisionTek&#8217;s two blower cooling fans are a much better solution than AMD&#8217;s reference solution for just about anything except for pairing two cards in CrossFire.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s head to the performance charts to see how the VisionTek HD R9 280X compares with the HD 7970 editions, the reference GTX 770 at stock, as well as against the $500 GTX 780.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: Performance Summary Charts--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Performance summary charts &amp; graphs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Here are two summary charts of 31 modern PC games and 4 synthetic benches. The highest settings are generally chosen and it is DX11 when there is a choice; DX10 is picked above DX9, and the settings are generally ultra or maxed unless specified on the chart. Specific settings are listed on the charts. The benches are run at 1920&#215;1080 and 2560&#215;1600.<\/p>\n<p>The first chart places the R9 280X in-between the stock HD 7970 and the GHz Edition.\u00a0 Performance wise, the VisionTek sits just below the Gigahertz edition until it is overclocked +85MHz on the core and +125MHz on the memory (to 1585\/1625MHz).\u00a0 It then runs away from the GHz edition at reference clocks.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Chart-1-RadeonsBeta1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39258\" alt=\"Chart-1-RadeonsBeta1\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Chart-1-RadeonsBeta1.jpg?resize=619%2C1502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Chart-1-RadeonsBeta1.jpg 619w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Chart-1-RadeonsBeta1-422x1024.jpg 422w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><em>Batman: Arkham Origins<\/em> is ABT&#8217;s very latest game benchmark and we did not have time to test the HD 7970.\u00a0 We used 3 sets of variables with everything On, Maxed out, and Ultra with these variables: (1) High FXAA\/PhysX Normal, (2) 4xAA\/PhysX normal, (3) High FXAA\/PhysX High.\u00a0 EA has shut down the online servers for<em> Battleforge<\/em>, so Origins will replace it in ABT&#8217;s 30-game benching suite.<\/p>\n<p>In the next chart we upgraded the drivers from Catalyst 13.11 Beta1 to 13.11 Beta6.\u00a0 We can see that AMD&#8217;s driver team has made some good performance improvements and we shall use these results in the main chart comparing the VisionTek 280x with the GeForce cards.\u00a0 Notice that AMD has fixed the AA performance in <em>Batman: Arkham Origins<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/CatB1vB6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39259\" alt=\"CatB1vB6\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/CatB1vB6.jpg?resize=492%2C1507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/CatB1vB6.jpg 492w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/CatB1vB6-334x1024.jpg 334w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 492px) 100vw, 492px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Main Chart:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here we are comparing the HD 7970s (Catalyst 13.11 Beta1) with the stock and overclocked VisionTek R9 280X (Catalyst 13.11 Beta7) versus the GTX 770 and the GTX 780.<a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Main-Chart.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39260\" alt=\"Main-Chart\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Main-Chart.jpg?resize=720%2C1377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Main-Chart.jpg 788w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Main-Chart-78x150.jpg 78w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Main-Chart-535x1024.jpg 535w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 788px) 100vw, 788px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>The stock VisionTek R9 280x wins in about 9 games out of thirty, with another 5 split depending on resolution, compared to a stock GTX 770.\u00a0 However, the results change to about 13 games in the Radeon&#8217;s favor, with another six split, when it is overclocked. In fact, we see the overclocked HD 7970 get close to GTX 780 performance in a couple of games. Of course, the GTX 780 is $500 and the VisionTek HD 7970 is $299.<\/p>\n<p>It is impressive to see a $299 video card scoring well against the more expensive GTX 770 cards.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: The Conclusion--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This has been quite an enjoyable exploration for us in evaluating the VisionTek R9 280X. At reference speeds, it did well performance-wise comparing it to the reference GTX 770. However, once we overclocked it, we even saw it narrow the performance gap somewhat with the $500 reference EVGA GTX 780. We are totally impressed with this enthusiast card which replaces the HD 7970 GHz Edition at a lower price point.<a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/280X-b1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-39272\" alt=\"280X-b\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/280X-b1.jpg?resize=300%2C163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/280X-b1-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/280X-b1-150x81.jpg 150w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/280X-b1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 The HD 7970s have been discontinued and few sales are to be found at this date.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We see good overclockability at stock voltage and fan profile even when the VisionTek R9 280X is overclocked beyond GHz Edition speeds, and it scales well in performance. It is also a very quiet card under load.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For its $299 price, once overclocked it gives good bang for buck compared to the performance of the reference GTX 770 which is priced at $329. The 3GB vRAM of the 280X over 2GB vRAM for the GTX 770 may be valuable for gaming at super-widescreen resolutions using multi-GPU CrossFire.
