We will compare these Radeons&#8217; single-GPU performance versus the previous Catalyst 14.3 Beta 3 driver and also versus the latest <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/nvidias-detonator-337-50-versus-catalyst-14-2-beta-3\/\">GeForce 337.50<\/a> beta drivers using GTX 760\/770\/780 Ti.<\/p>\n<p>This driver performance evaluation will give a natural comparison between the driver performance improvements for AMD and Nvidia&#8217;s latest set of beta drivers. Both sets of drivers were released quite recently. This is an important time for Nvidia and AMD to showcase their best driver improvements, and AMD&#8217;s Catalyst 14.4 became WHQL yesterday.<a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/MetroLL.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-41706\" alt=\"MetroLL\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/MetroLL-300x187.jpg?resize=300%2C187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/MetroLL-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/MetroLL-150x93.jpg 150w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/MetroLL-1024x640.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a> Performance should be identical between the 14.4 Release Candidate and the 14.4 WHQL driver as retesting with a R9 270X indicated.<\/p>\n<p>We will revisit Catalyst 14.4 WHQL performance when Nvidia&#8217;s next WHQL driver is released We are going to test Catalyst 14.4 RC and 14.3 Beta 3 versus GeForce 337.50 Beta using our current benchmark suite of 22 games plus 4 synthetic benchmarks &#8211; FireStrike<em>, Heaven 4.0<\/em>, and 3DMark 11.<\/p>\n<p>Our testing platform is Windows 7 64-bit, using Intel Core i7-4770K at 4.00GHz, ECS&#8217;s flagship Z87 Golden motherboard and 16GB Kingston &#8220;Beast&#8221; DD3 at 2133MHz, and the settings and hardware are identical except for the video cards. The R9 290X and the GTX 780 Ti are tested at higher settings and resolutions generally than we test the midrange cards as noted on the charts.<\/p>\n<p>All of our games are tested at two resolutions: 2560&#215;1600 and 1920&#215;1080, and we use DX11\/10\/10.1 whenever possible with an emphasis on DX11 games. Let\u2019s get right to the test configuration, the driver release notes and the tests. <!--pagetitle: Introduction--><!--nextpage--> So as not to bottleneck our graphics, we are using Intel&#8217;s Haswell platform with our Core i7-4770K overclocked to 4.0GHz which is a good match for Ivy Bridge at 4.5GHz. The issue can be overcome by rebooting the PC; upon reboot the display driver will be installed. The remaining Catalyst components can then be installed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s head to the charts and see the performance comparison in 22 games and in 3 synthetics since we recently tested the <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/galaxys-gtx-760-gc-mini-overclocking-small-package\/\">Galaxy GTX 760<\/a> versus the VisionTek R9 270X.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><!--pagetitle: Test Configuration--><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Summary Chart &amp; Conclusion--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 150%; line-height: normal;\">The Results and the Conclusion<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here are the results of 25 benchmarks &#8211; 22 games and 4 synthetics &#8211; compared between Release Candidate\u00a0 14.4 versus Catalyst 14.3 beta 3 versus the latest beta GeForce 337.50 drivers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">First up is the Radeon Chart.\u00a0 &#8220;Wins&#8221; between the two Catalyst driver sets are in <strong>bold<\/strong>; if there is a tie, both results will be in bold type.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Column one represents the PowerColor R9 290X at stock Uber speeds tested with the older Catalyst 14.3 Beta versus Column Two with the Catalyst 14.4 Release Candidate drivers. Column 3 shows the PowerColor R9 270X at PCS+ Edition speeds with the older beta, compared with the latest Catalyst 14.4 RC beta in Column 4. We also find that the newest GeForce 337.50 driver also brought good performance gains and recommend that you download and upgrade to the very latest drivers no matter which video card you may have!<a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tSW.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-39102\" alt=\"tSW\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tSW.jpg?resize=300%2C187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tSW-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tSW-150x93.jpg 150w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tSW-1024x640.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To sum it up, we would recommend upgrading to either of these latest drivers because there are real advantages, and the pluses that we found outweigh the rare few negatives. AMD&#8217;s driver team has made some decent improvements for single-GPU performance just as Nvidia has. We also give our recommendation to the latest GeForce 337.50 beta drivers. In most cases they provide performance increases with no negatives that we have encountered.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll be back to expand this testing to multi-GPU and as newer drivers are released.
