{"id":42847,"date":"2014-08-14T16:05:11","date_gmt":"2014-08-14T15:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=42847"},"modified":"2014-08-15T12:37:30","modified_gmt":"2014-08-15T11:37:30","slug":"galaxy-gtx-780-v2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/galaxy-gtx-780-v2\/","title":{"rendered":"ABT evaluates Galaxy&#8217;s GTX 780 V2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In May, Galaxy announced the GeForce GTX 780 V2, bringing a new alternative to the reference blower-type design of the GeForce GTX 780.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/GTX780-V2-3GB-Box+Card.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-42864\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/GTX780-V2-3GB-Box+Card.jpg?resize=300%2C278\" alt=\"GTX780-V2-3GB-Box+Card\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/GTX780-V2-3GB-Box+Card-300x278.jpg 300w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/GTX780-V2-3GB-Box+Card-150x139.jpg 150w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/GTX780-V2-3GB-Box+Card.jpg 918w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>The reference version is prized for its ability to SLI well, even in a small case as it exhausts much of the GPU&#8217;s heat out of the case.\u00a0 Some PC gamers are considering an upgrade to GTX 780 SLI, and there are few reference version choices available.<\/p>\n<p>The PCB on the new V2 shares the same build and layout as the standard GTX 780, however, the cooler is a newer AIB custom design that promises a lower overall temperature while maintaining a similarly silent operation as the reference version.\u00a0 We received an evaluation sample from Galaxy on loan, and we put it though its paces for you.<\/p>\n<p>This evaluation focuses primarily on the performance of the Galaxy GTX 780 V2 as it relates to the original reference GTX 780 that we got from Nvidia, the reference <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/evgas-reference-gtx-780-meets-290x\/\">EVGA GTX 780<\/a> that we reviewed last year, as well as to other cards in the GeForce line-up and to their Radeon counterparts.\u00a0 We will also look at SLI scaling to see if a second GTX 780 V2 might be a good idea to increase performance at 1920&#215;1080 and at 2560&#215;1600.<\/p>\n<p>As a reference design, the Galaxy GTX 780 V2 includes 3GB of GDDR5 and supports the latest graphics technologies such as NVIDIA GPU Boost 2.0, Adaptive Vsync, DirectX 11.2, OpenGL 4.4 and PhysX. We use 2x8GB of fast Kingston HyperX \u201cBeast\u201d DDR3 at 2133MHz in an ECS flagship Z87 \u201cGolden\u201d motherboard.\u00a0 As part of ABT&#8217;s &#8220;Big Picture&#8221;, we will use 26 modern games, and compare video card performance from the R9 270X\/GTX 760 on the lower midrange, to R9 280X\/GTX 770, to the higher end R9 290X\/GTX 780\/GTX 780 Ti.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Let&#8217;s unbox and then test our Galaxy GTX 780 V2 after we check out its features and specifications.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--pagetitle: Introduction--><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: Features &amp; We were able to overclock a further +200MHz to the core with complete stability\u00a0 even though we did not adjust the voltage nor our fan profile.\u00a0 The only exception was with <em>GRiD 2 <\/em>where we had to drop the OC a notch or increase the voltage to complete the benchmark loop. We also managed +500MHz on the memory clocks with complete stability.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Our maximum observed stock boost was 979MHz which increased to 1215MHz when we overclocked its core by 200MHz. Temperatures were very good with 82C as the maximum observed temperature at stock clocks and voltage and only rose another 5C to 87C at maximum clocks and with added voltage. This was with Summer temperatures and a hot testing room at 80F.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">With the fan profile at automatic, the Galaxy GTX 780 V2 remained quiet, the fan never exceeding 63%. Even with overclocking to our maximum in a very warm testing environment, the fan rarely hit 73%. Because of it&#8217;s custom fan design, the Galaxy GTX 780 V2 is a quiet card, probably as quiet as the reference version to this editor&#8217;s ear.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For our testing of the Galaxy GTX 780 V2, we usually move the temperature target to its maximum 95C and the power target to 105%. The power adjustments are the same as for the reference version, and all for all other Nvidia video cards. In this way, we do not allow lack of power nor moderately warm temperatures to throttle performance. It did well performance-wise comparing it to the reference GTX 780 in every way, and when overclocked, it comes in very close to the GTX 780 Ti&#8217;s performance.
