But the question remains would they spend R&amp;D $$$s or acquire a smaller SSD maker with the technical know-how. Starting today atleast onw of the big boys, Western Digital, looks to change that by acquiring<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"border-collapse: separate; color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: 2; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"border-collapse: collapse; font-size: 12px;\"> <\/span><\/span>SiliconSystems for $65 million. This company supplies SSDs for the embedded systems market and will now be known as the WD Solid-Stage Storage business unit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Here is the official press release<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">LAKE FOREST, Calif. &#8211; Mar. 30, 2009 &#8211; Western Digital Corp. (NYSE: WDC), a world leader in hard drive storage for computing and consumer electronics applications, today announced that it has completed a $65 million cash acquisition of SiliconSystems, Inc., Aliso Viejo, Calif., a leading supplier of solid-state drives for the embedded systems market. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">Since its inception in 2002, SiliconSystems has sold millions of SiliconDrive\u00ae products to meet the high performance, high reliability and multi-year product lifecycle demands of the network-communications, industrial, embedded-computing, medical, military and aerospace markets. These markets accounted for approximately one third of worldwide solid-state drive revenues in 2008. SiliconSystems&#8217; product portfolio includes solid-state drives with SATA, EIDE, PC Card, USB and CF interfaces in 2.5-inch, 1.8-inch, CF and other form factors. SiliconSystems has developed extensive intellectual property to address the stringent embedded systems market requirements to ensure data integrity, eliminate unscheduled downtime, protect application data and software and provide for data security and protection through its patented and patent-pending PowerArmor\u00ae, SiSMART\u00ae, SolidStor\u00ae and SiSecure\u2122 technologies.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">WD&#8217;s storage industry leadership, worldwide infrastructure, and technical and financial resources will enable further growth in SiliconSystems&#8217; existing markets and customer relationships.
