id="caption-attachment-2423" class="wp-caption-text">Vista All Low

First, we find an apparently strange Radeon driver bug with this configuration:

Now we move all settings from high to medium and observe the following strange differences:

There is a slight loss of detail and simplification across some textures in the scene; however, medium is actually better in the high.

Finally, we move all settings from medium to <span dramatic loss of detail and simplification across almost all textures in the game.

Water caustics are gone and the level of transparency of the water is dramatically reduced.

There is a large reduction of vegetation on the hill and also along the coastline running to the left.

Many rocks are missing from the coastline to the left in front of the buildings and details are mostly gone.

Here are the benchmark results from the GPU benchmark:

<img possibly due to continuing driver bugs (in some cases textures are worse than medium). get interesting as we can clearly see where Crysis ’ main rendering bottleneck lies as confirmed by both platforms: the settings tied to shader quality. Shadows and objects also impact performance quite a lot as well, while texture quality shows almost no impact.

Interestingly, post-processing had a much greater effect on performance on the Vista/Radeon system than the XP/GeForce system, probably as a result of the extra rendering work that was activated by using very high.

 Test 3: Individual Settings, Part 2 (XP)

The next set of settings cover the ones that are more dynamic in nature and as such will only impact the scene depending on what the player and/or enemies are doing.

Again we compare all settings to high quality and then set one setting at a time to low to see what the performance impact is. While physics and particles help a bit, they only help if such things are happening on the screen rather than the first set of settings that tend to have a bigger impact regardless of the scene. So if you’re trying to tweak the game to run better under a wide range of conditions, it’s better to start with the settings we used in part 1.

 Test 4: Anti-Aliasing (XP)

Lastly we’ll compare anti-aliasing performance and image quality. Driver level anti-aliasing doesn’t appear to work with Crysis (even after making a custom nVidia profile to force it) though interestingly transparency anti-aliasing will work, but only intermittently on small parts of the scene. The best course of action then is to use the game’s AA settings.

Note that to enable AA from the game you will need to have the shader quality set to at least high. You could also try zooming the screenshots a bit to spot the difference a bit better.

We reverted back to the GPU benchmark for these tests and used all settings at high quality.

Dropping to 2xAA from 4xAA results in a small performance improvement while disabling AA completely provides a reasonable difference over 4xAA.
