Xbox One’s family plan has been cancelled, price staying at $499
Don Mattrick made a comment during yesterday’s policy reversal that mentioned that some announced features would not be possible under the new policies.
They stated:
“These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc,” Mattrick said. “Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.”
Marc Whitten, the chief product officer for Xbox, said in an interview with CNET, the company has “no plans” to lower the $499 price of the new Xbox One console. This echoes what Microsoft PR has been focusing on: Xbox One simply has features you cannot get anywhere else.
In the same interview, Marc stated that those who purchase physical discs will have the same abilities that they did with the last generation on Xbox 360.
Under the Xbox One’s purposed family plan, gamers were originally going to be able to access a game from any console after they loaded the disc onto their Xbox One. This included 10 other people in a circle of friends/family that could also access the content instantly.
Physical users will no longer get these benefits:
“You won’t see that content now,” Whitten said, though gamers will be able to see all the content they purchase digitally.
What’s more, Microsoft is doing away with the policy of allowing up to 10 family members to share disc-based games even if they didn’t have the disc in their console.
“We won’t be delivering that,” Whitten said.
The cancelled Xbox One family plan was exciting to many gamers. Buy a single disc and share it with your son at college, with your friend living a couple of states away, and so on.
