I think thats ridiculous. Trees will grow anywhere they can take root. I have seen trees grow tall when their is no possible way they have rooted in a sustainable footing, they grow and grow until they fall over.
Trees are no different than any other life on earth. They multiply as quickly and as much as possible, trees will block sun from other trees as they grow trying to get all the sun they possibly can. they also try to suck up every last drop of water, which kills trees and shrubs around them.
Its strange how many people seem to be so confused. All life forms have in common, the drive to reproduce as much as possible. All life struggles to be superior, killing off competition around it. This is a given.
Humans consciously try to fight our instincts, which is one of the major separations between us and the other life forms on earth. Tbe fact that we cant always be above it, that doesnt make use dumber than trees.
And as far as being robbed, I know people who have been. As a matter of fact, I was robbed not to many years ago. And other than cloths, bed, and the couch...they got everything
