Look, I can understand your guys' disdain for Microsoft. I get it. They were considered a monopoly at one time and to a large extent they still are today. They have done some really shady things. I think it's great that Sweeney has pointed out how Microsoft intends to monetize Windows 10 for themselves. He has also pointed out some issues with their platform. I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Unfortunately I don't think DirectX and Microsoft are going anywhere any time soon. Yes, OpenGL has caught on for other platforms but for PC games I can count the modern OpenGL games on one hand. John Carmack is very talented with OpenGL but he has largely disappeared at this point, I don't even know what he is doing.

This just isn't true- compare SFV side by side on the XBone and PS4(and yes, that is my point). MS botched this generation so badly they managed to make Street Fighter a console exclusive for Sony- this generation is turning into a PS2 style obliteration- developers are only coding for the lowest common denominator if you are saying the XBone doesn't rate at all, which don't get me wrong, is absolutely valid but not what you were implying

To be quite honest, I'm not thrilled with the situation. In the last generation MS absolutely owned the white trash community and it so showed. Junior KKK rallys best describes *every* encounter I had with Live for years, never- not once- heard that kind of talk on the PS3. Unfortunately, with the PS4 utterly dominating the market we are getting those disgusting excuses for humans on PSN now, not happy about it. I rather liked having one console for all of the white trash, and the other where everyone else could play.

If this is about their free/discounted games online, my son was just telling me yesterday PS4s network is a joke. Said he's always getting good free games on Xbox Live, and big discounts on other games and that the PSN stuff was always cheap little discounts and the free stuff is crap no one would want.

He's on PS4 80% of the time these days but says that aspect is a joke.

It is true that the PS+ giveaways are not what they used to be currently.  Sony seems to be using the PS+ giveaways as a way of raising awareness of indie titles.  Meanwhile LIVE Gold is overflowing with A+ titles for my 360 (most of which I already have though).

My thoughts on the situation are that PS4 is popular enough that it doesn't need free incentives to sell whereas M$ is in precisely the opposite situation, they need every little extra they can muster to try and entice a sale.

I have another theory:

Sony is like AMD. A very large failing company that is being kept afloat by what once were small divisions, not their primary markets.

After all the sell offs and layoffs, they're cutting corners on the giveaways the profitability of their tv, pc, phone, personal electronics used to subsidize.

MS makes billions every quarter on it's core business, so they can afford to subsidize the XBone business by making Live Gold a much better deal than PSN. (unless of course a person wants to play titles like "Virtual Pencils 2020" and "The Runaway Rabbit")

Games with Gold didn't happen until after the PS3 started catching up to the 360 and was an attempt to try and stop the PS3 from overtaking 360 sales wise.  PS+ free games were a well established thing at that point.

M$ is giving away A+ titles relatively early on in CrapBOX's life not because they want to but because they have to in order to generate sales.  The games being given away could be earning M$ royalties through sales.

Sony originally started PS+ free games for the exact same reasons - to sell more PS3's.

I don't think Microsoft is desperate. If they were, they would cut the price of the Xbox One. Right now they are making much more profit on each console sold compared to Sony, they have a much cheaper bill of materials to deal with and the consoles cost the same to buy.

The Xbox One is far from a failed console. The Wii U is a failed console and it's doing much worse. Clearly the PS4 is winning but I would not call the Xbox One a failure, not by any means. It's decent enough, just not the best.

On the subject of A+ game giveaways, why would Sony do it this early in the console's life unless they are desperate?  They would only deprive themselves of royalties.  Neither PS4 or CrapBOX's libraries are huge at the moment.

It is easy to see why M$ is doing it right now.  They are losing this console generation, badly, they are desperate.  Sony isn't.

I don't believe gamers purchase consoles in the hope of getting free copies of anything.  They purchase the console so that they can then purchase  and play games.  Any free offerings are just a bonus, not the main reason to purchase.

I like free games just as much as anyone else does.  I didn't purchase any of my consoles (or my PC) in the hope of getting any though.  Neither did anyone else.

Given the number of reviews that say the difference in game image quality is so close you have to look for the differnces, I think the free games is a great reason to buy XBones.

A. Backwards compatibility and son having larger XBone library means I have a LOT more games on XBone
B. Unlike you, I believe the reviews that say you'd have to be looking for the differences in image quality and that they are not that large
C. If I learn the Xbone controller, odds are good it will be better integrated with PCs if I ever set up a HTPC for gaming
D. I want to play the XBone exclusives more. It seems to me a lot of the PS games are developed in other countries, while XBone games are developed here. I like to support American industry where possible.
E. XBone is an American product. I realize you have to buy everything imported (no WallabeeBox) but we can choose (or not) to support our neighbors here.
