ABT Top Apps for 11/29- iOS
Apple and Google may be at war but Google has never kept its services, including Google search, off the Apple App Store. When it first launched it was a simple search engine with no real features. Now Google search has been updated to have almost every Google service available with just a couple of taps by utilizing Google’s enormous data in almost every aspect of the web. Why is this any different than just using the built-in Google search feature in Safari? The app now includes voice search which is a killer feature that often embarrasses Siri’s results. If you ask Siri for the best burger in town, you will get a list of nearby burger joints with some star ratings. In contrast, Google search will show you the top rated place along with a beautiful presentation. Google’s only downside is its inability to access the actual phone like Siri can with calls, texts, and so on.
Games based around movie releases are rarely well done. Fix it Felix Jr. is a game that feels and plays like it came directly out of a 1980’s arcade. The game has a bad guy reminiscent of Donkey Kong named Wreck-it Ralph. As Fix-it Felix you are a handyman with a hammer as your tool. You need to use this hammer to undo the damage Ralph has done. While you attempt to fix everything Ralph hurls things at you, birds fly by, and eventually walls block off some paths to windows. The game does end rather quickly after 8 or so increasingly difficult levels, but since it is free we can’t complain much. There is a “pro” paid version with more features and other games that are featured in the film.

3. Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery ($2.99)
A good mobile adventure game is hard. The same goes for music games. Sword & Sworcery combines them both in an amazing journey. The developer describes the game as “an exploratory action adventure with an emphasis on audiovisual style. Traverse a mythic little realm, use a sword to do battle & evoke sworcery to solve mystical musical mysteries.” The game features a ton of walking and exploration, and only a few battles. There are also puzzles that are sometimes impossible to figure out but fun nonetheless. This isn’t an easy adventure or one with a lot of action and the price tag of $2.99 is steep. The adventure, music, interesting environments and more makes the tedious nature of the game worth it.
4. Knights of Pen and Paper ($1.99)
Knights of Pen and Paper is an “indie turn-based retro style pixel-art RPG.” This is basically a comedic version of Dungeons and Dragons. The game features quirky graphics, humorous text, and battles featuring spells and weapons. The game will pull you in and is infinitely re-playable. This feels like an all new experience but with the fun RPG elements you already know: spells, quests, leveling up characters, and great dialogue. There are 12 different classes, 27 characters, more than 100 quests, and more. As you level up you gain more abilities based on your class. Other upgrades, like new armor or weapons, require gold used in the shop. Gold is also earned through battles and quests and can also be bought with real money through micro-transactions. Knights of Pen and Paper is the best $1.99 I have spent in a long time. If you like RPG games and are looking for a truly entertaining take on the classic style you shouldn’t look any further.
In Startales you are a star that needs to be flung by clouds over and over to gain momentum to go as high as you can. It centers around you as a star and another much brighter lady star – one that you fell in love with. She is so bright she cannot see you. So you need to gather up more light from other stars and become bright enough for her to notice you. The game has elements of “run forever” games that are well known like power-ups and point multipliers. Reminiscent of “Tiny Wings,” Startales features a black cloud that ends your “run” if you don’t maintain speed or attain enough stars. These types of games are always good for a quick play when you are short on time. Startales doesn’t offer anything groundbreaking but it is still fun to play.
