ATI Video: DX10.1 improves FPS
AMD/ATI has put out a video on YouTube in which they claim to show the performance improvement that DX10.1 offers over DX10. As a quick reminder, DX10.1 is only supported by AMD/ATI cards starting with HD3000 series and it is not currently supported by Nvidia cards. The games they tested in this video include:
According to their video:
Battleforge showed 22% improvement
HAWX showed 21% improvement
Stormrise showed 25% improvement
Here is the video:
Usually these kinds of videos are meant for marketing, and may not represent the entire truth. Since this video looked legit with FRAPS counter, I went to my testbed and decided to test out HAWX as that is the only DX10.1 game they tested that is available to me with my newly acquired Diamond HD4890 XOC.
I am happy to report that DX10.1 does indeed provide performance benefit over DX10. I saw a 13% improvement in average FPS. This may be largely due to using a CPU limited resolution i.e. 1280×1024. I think perhaps testing at a higher resolution, we might even see more performance improvement.
My Test System:
Intel Q9450 @ 3.2 GHz
GIGABYTE EX-38 DS4
GeIL 4GB(2x2GB) 800MHz 5-4-4-12
Diamond HD4890 XOC 925MHz/1050 MHz(4200 MHz effective) 1GB GDDR5
Cooler Master Silent Pro 600M 600W
Cooler Master Sniper Case (PS and Case supplied by Cooler Master)

Here at ABT we believe in providing you, our valued reader, as much information as possible. In addition to Bar Graphs, I will try to add line graphs showing Instantaneous FPS and also add one more unique feature to my reviews which hopefully we will be the first to feature. Using Rivatuner’s Hardware monitoring module, I would like to show you how a game uses CPU Cores, GPU Temperature, Fan Speed %age, RAM, Page File, and GPU usage (possible in ATI cards only). Here’s a sample of what I am talking about:
We will try to test this game at other resolutions and report back with any further changes for you.
