Firefox 3.1 now called Firefox 3.5
Mozilla is getting ready for the next round of browser wars. And its coming to the bout with heavy ammunition. Mozilla is considering that the next release of the second most popular browser in the world, Firefox, be designated version 3.5 instead of the 3.1 as it was to be called previously. Mozilla feels that the sheer magnitude of changes and the work that has been done in the forthcoming release deserves a .5 rather than .1.
“The increase in scope represented by TraceMonkey and Private Browsing, plus the sheer volume of work that’s gone into everything from video and layout to places and the plugin service make it a larger increment than we believe is reasonable to label .1,” explained Mozilla’s Interim VP of Engineering, Michael Shaver. “3.5 will help set expectations better about the amount of awesome that’s packed into Shiretoko [build code name], and we expect uptake help from that as well.”
With the next release of other major browsers in the market (Safari 4, Chrome 2, Opera 10, Internet Explorer 8 ) all the browsers are getting a number incremented in their version which makes it sound like a big improvement. Mozilla doesnt want their next release to sound like just a minor improvement. Hence the .5 justifies their naming methodology. And we expect this proposal to pass without any opposition.
We’ll be keepin an eye on the latest developments.
