Former Valve Employees Launch Kickstarter For Augmented Reality Headset
A Kickstarter campaign for a new “augmented reality” headset that uses small projectors to produce 3D holographic-like projections on a surface has been launched by Two former Valve employees. The two project developers are Jeri Ellsworth and Rick Johnson- Jeri is an inventor and hardware guru while Rick has been in the game industry as a programmer for many years. The fundraising goal is $400,000.
The device is called castAR and it works by using two main components, a pair of glasses and a surface. On the glasses are two micro-projectors (one for each eye) that casts a perspective view of a stereoscopic 3D image onto the surface. In between the projectors is a small camera that scans for IR markers on the surface, which allow for head position and orientation tracking.
