Introducing AMD’s HD 6970 and HD 6950
Lost Planet 2
Lost Planet 2 is the sequel to Lost Planet: Extreme Condition and is also made by Capcom. The events take place ten years after the first game and on the same, now thawed, EDN III. The PC version was released on October 12, 2010 and it runs on the MT-Framework 2.0 engine; an updated version of the engine used in several Capcom games. Campaign mode can have up to 4 players working together over the Internet. Lost Planet 2 allows players to create and customize their own characters which will allow them to unlock more things after leveling up and downloading content. There is no real single player content although you can play with the AI.
We are using the stand alone benchmark in DX11 with maximum settings. We also have the full retail game with the identical benchmark that we shall use as soon as we can. As the game is quite demanding, we first test at 2560×1600 resolution with no AA.
Just as in the original game, none of our cards can play Lost Planet 2 at 2560×1600 at the highest settings and AA although the GTX 580 comes closest. However, we do see the GTX 570 again passing the GTX 480 and leaving the Radeons behind. Let’s lower the resolution to 1920×1200, add 4xAA, and test again with all of our DX11 cards.
In this more tessellation-heavy DX11 game, the HD 6870 catches the HD 5870 (finally)! That is quite an accomplishment, however, even the overclocked GTX 460 can beat any of the Radeons by a significant margin. The GTX 580 is impressive and the GTX 570 again beats the GTX 480. Perhaps there are still performance gains to be made for the new Caymans with subsequent driver releases.
Thanks for such an extensive and thorough review, great job! Really enjoyed it. Personally, I feel a little disappointed with 6970 performance, I guess I was expecting a match to GTX580, or better. I have a feeling a lot of people had similar expectations. Oh, well… can’t blame 580 for being a stronger card. But considering the super-competitive pricing point of the new AMD flagship (which also came as a big surprise) it’s safe to say that HD6970 is also a winner in it’s own weight category and will make a lot of gamers very happy.
I’m a bit disappointed, too. The GTX 570 currently has the better performance/price ratio but the 6900 series still offers great ratio…just not as good as GTX 570.
Many people will be pleased nonetheless
The settings pic on the GTA 4 page is missing.
Thank-you. There are still a few images that are still going to be uploaded.
The settings for GTA-IV are all at “high” and 100%.
Apologies for the delay; we had issues with our under-NDA images that stopped us from uploading any further images after the evaluation was published; the permissions were just fixed yesterday.
FIXED.
u should turn on the a.i catalyst to quality as its the default graphic settings for ati graphic cards.
No PC gamer should buy an expensive graphics card to run its IQ settings at less than High Quality.
We test Nvidia vs AMD *both* at High Quality settings. You can always lower the settings yourself and gain a bit more performance if you like.
Good – I should certainly say I’m impressed with your website. I had no trouble navigating through all the tabs and related info. The site ended up being truly easy to access. Good job.
