Introducing AMD’s HD 6970 and HD 6950
Overclocking & Performance Summary Chart
This editor has his own set of criteria for overclocking the HD 6970 and the HD 6950. We do not raise the fan speed nor do we increase the voltage. Even so, we found Cayman to be just a bit hotter-running than our HD 5870 and the cooler is slightly noisier under full load. For overclocking we used Catalyst Control Center and we we were disappointed that we could not get more than +40 MHz on either core; the HD 6870 is evidently limited by its core and the HD 6950 is limited by its software. Here are our HD 6970 clocks:
Reference >> the new OC:
880/1375 MHz >> 920/1375 MHz (higher resulted in instability):
And now here are our HD 6950 clocks
Reference >> the new OC:
800/1250 MHz >> 840/1325 MHz (the max allowed by CCC)
An overclock of +40 MHz on each core brought us some decent performance increases which you can see in the Performance Summary.
Performance Summary and Overclocked Cayman results
Here is our performance summary which compares both the stock and overclocked performance of the HD 6970 and the HD 6950 against the HD 5870 and HD 6870 as well as the the GTX 570 plus the GTX 480 and GTX 580. The games are grouped mostly by DX9 > DX10 > and DX11 and somewhat in chronological order of release. Average framerates are compared.
There you have it. Let’s head over to the last page for our price to performance comments and our conclusion.
Thanks for such an extensive and thorough review, great job! Really enjoyed it. Personally, I feel a little disappointed with 6970 performance, I guess I was expecting a match to GTX580, or better. I have a feeling a lot of people had similar expectations. Oh, well… can’t blame 580 for being a stronger card. But considering the super-competitive pricing point of the new AMD flagship (which also came as a big surprise) it’s safe to say that HD6970 is also a winner in it’s own weight category and will make a lot of gamers very happy.
I’m a bit disappointed, too. The GTX 570 currently has the better performance/price ratio but the 6900 series still offers great ratio…just not as good as GTX 570.
Many people will be pleased nonetheless
The settings pic on the GTA 4 page is missing.
Thank-you. There are still a few images that are still going to be uploaded.
The settings for GTA-IV are all at “high” and 100%.
Apologies for the delay; we had issues with our under-NDA images that stopped us from uploading any further images after the evaluation was published; the permissions were just fixed yesterday.
FIXED.
u should turn on the a.i catalyst to quality as its the default graphic settings for ati graphic cards.
No PC gamer should buy an expensive graphics card to run its IQ settings at less than High Quality.
We test Nvidia vs AMD *both* at High Quality settings. You can always lower the settings yourself and gain a bit more performance if you like.
Good – I should certainly say I’m impressed with your website. I had no trouble navigating through all the tabs and related info. The site ended up being truly easy to access. Good job.
