ID software’s CEO Todd Hollenshead interviewed
In a recent interview with ID software’s CEO Todd Hollenshead, he had plenty of interesting things to say. Among other things he talked about Doom 4, and because there’s not much information available yet, any scrap of news is fascinating.
He states:
But everything I’ve seen on it is classic Doom, so I don’t really have worries that people aren’t going to like it and start talking about it.
It’s not a sequel to Doom 3, but it’s not a reboot either. Doom 3 was sort of a reboot. It’s a little bit different than those, and if I told you why, I would get my ass kicked when I got back. So I’ll just have to leave it at that.
Interesting; so it’s not a reboot like Doom 3 was, but it’s not a sequel either.
When he says it’s like classic Doom, I wonder if he means it’ll be a return to the classic run-n-gun formula while mowing down hordes of enemies? Such a game would be interesting in this day and age as that type of gaming has largely disappeared in favor of more realistic FPSes. The last major title to do this was Painkiller, and that was released five years ago.
I cannot wait to see what they do with Doom 4 and given Doom 3 was arguably ID’s most successful game to date, I’m sure Doom 4 will also deliver the goods. I absolutely loved Doom 3’s single player campaign – flashlight limitations and all – and I still regularly replay it whenever I get the urge.
As for E3, he has the following to say:
But what I expect is, I expect that we’ll be showing Wolfenstein at E3, I expect that we’ll have some new stuff at E3 that we haven’t announced yet.
As you may know, the new Wolfenstein game is currently in development by Raven Software and will be a sequel to Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Some promotional videos have already been released about the sequel, but it’ll be good to get more information as I absolutely cannot wait for this title.
RTCW had one of the finest single player campaigns I’ve ever played (not to mention Enemy Territory offering very innovative multiplayer), and Raven Software has historically produced very good FPSes.
The new announcements at E3 also sound interesting, and I look forward to seeing what new material will be based off ID software’s technology.
