Nvidia CEO says that GPU performance increases by 570x in next 6 years while CPU increases only by 3x
Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said that he expected GPU compute to increase its current capabilities by 570x, while ‘pure’ CPU performance will progress by a limited 3x while speaking at at the Hot Chips symposium in Stanford University. He explained that such advances could enable the development of realtime universal language translation devices and advanced forms of augmented reality.
According to Huang this could benefit a number of "real-world" GPU applications, including energy exploration, interactive ray tracing and CGI simulations.
When asked if he were to do it all over again, would he partition the CPU and GPU into separate chip, Huang answered that there were three primary constituents: programmers, OEMs/ODMs and chip designers. He explained that each device has its own differences and functions which makes it difficult to integrate the new and rapidly developing architectures into one device. Having them as a separate devices allows them to progress at their pace.
