PhysX works on iPhone: Nvidia
Tom’s Hardware published an interesting story today. Nvidia told them that Nvidia’s PhysX works on iPhone. Yes that is right, Nvidia’s engine for producing physics effects in games originally developed by Ageia works on Apple’s iPhone. Now that Sony has licensed PhysX for PlayStation 3 which works by using the the CPU and the SPU, which are both part of the Cell processor, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that PhysX can be made to work on iPhone’s ARM processor core. This is another effort by Nvidia to make PhysX a widely accepted industry standard when it comes to producing physics effects in games.
Nvidia has been working hard to get game developers to adopt this physics engine in their games. Although we have seen some games that make use of Nvidia’s CUDA capable graphic cards (8800 series and above) to accelerate physics effects in games, it has not been widely adopted. PhysX faces tough competition from the most widely adopted physics engine, Havok, which uses CPU for accelerating physics engine unlike PhysX which can use both CPU and Nvidia’s CUDA capable graphic cards.

At the present time however, no official announcements have been made. While there are really neat 3D games on the iPhone, there are none out there that take advantage of PhysX. As far as we’re aware, Apple does not have any publicly available documentation for PhysX development.
