The Big GPU Shootout: Part I, Upgrade Now or Wait?
Unreal Tournament3
Unreal Tournament 3 (UT3) is the fourth game in the Unreal Tournament series and the eighth Unreal game, but it has been numbered and named in relation to the engine it runs on. UT3 is a first-person shooter and online multiplayer video game by Epic Games. It was released for Windows on November 19, 2007. While many games share the same Unreal 3 engine, the developers can decide how high the system requirements will be, by increasing the level of detail. Unreal Tournament 3 provides a good balance between image quality and performance, rendering complex scenes even on lower end hardware. Of course, on high end graphics cards you can really turn up the detail.. UT3 is primarily an online multiplayer title offering several game modes, including large-scale Warfare, Capture-the-Flag, and Deathmatch. It also includes an offline single-player game with a campaign that includes team members with their own personalities. UT3’s vehicles have been split into two factions, the Axon vehicles and Necris vehicles with the addition that every player is equipped with a personal hoverboard.
Even the older video cards have no problem with UT3 even at the highest settings we ran. Unreal Tournament3 is largely CPU bound, even at a resolution of 1920×1200. We do not see 4870X2 scaling largely because of this issue. We are quite impressed at the visuals of the maxed out Unreal3 engine even with our older midrange GPU. No real need to upgrade unless you force AA in the control panel. Here are our benchmark results:
