Thermaltake’s Overseer RX-I – a big case for big cooling
Final verdict
After months of living with the Thermaltake Overseer RX-I, we like it for its looks and we appreciate it for its ability to keep our components cool. We love this case for its ease of installing and removing hardware. Best of all, we like the top hard drive dock for its incredible convenience and we would find it difficult now to use a case without this feature. In addition, using Ivy Bridge’s Z77 platform, the two external USB 3.0 ports noticeably speed up transferring data over using USB 2.0.
Let’s sum up the many positives verses any negatives:
Positive:
- The HDD dock is awesome for its convenience. We would suggest that Thermaltake add a second one if possible.
- Good looks. It’s also ideal for a gamer that needs a full-size tower.
- Excellent cooling performance with 3 stock fans that are very quiet
- Well-managed spacious interior.
- Excellent cable management system with intelligent cutouts for easy CPU removal and installation
- Easy customization for adding additional cooling fans or for watercooling
- Tool-free design and user friendly
- Dust filters are included for every space that counts and the case is designed to keep dust out
- Three year warranty!
- It’s on sale at Newegg for $115 after $15 mail-in-rebate with free shipping!
Negatives:
- No negatives. We would like the doors to swing out instead of slide if we had a choice.
Our conclusion is that the Overseer RX-I is a great enthusiast stock full tower case that allows the flexibility to cool as you choose. The Thermaltake Overseer RX-I is a quality and relatively inexpensive full tower case for users who want great looks, style and excellent cooling including watercooling options. The Overseer RX-I is subjectively a better looking case than the Chaser MK-I and it provides great value by leaving off a few features that most gamers will not miss.
Gamers will particularly like this case. You need not buy any extra fans or do any customization unless you are have extreme cooling needs. Best of all, Thermaltake has designed the Overseer RX-I with plenty of room to spare. Using the Overseer meant easy and fun builds with large components and it is a pleasure to move even oversized hardware into and out of this case. However, because of its large size and bulk, we would not necessarily recommend this case for taking regularly to LAN parties.
The Overseer RX-I deserves our “Editor’s Choice” award at the very least because we love Thermaltake’s hard drive dock! It is that convenient and it saves a lot of time. And it deserves ABT’s Editor’s Choice because it can keep even the hottest of enthusiast systems running cool and in style. We are as impressed with it in its own way as we were with the Thermaltake Chaser MK-I and the Element G that we evaluated before it. The Overseer RX-I comes highly recommended!
Our very special thanks go out to Thermaltake for supplying us with their Overseer RX-I case. Now that we have our case set up and a hot Ivy Bridge CPU under Thermaltake’s Water2.0, we have plans to also review Pro and Performer watercoolers against the Noctua NH-DH14 this upcoming week.
However, first we will evaluate the EVGA Z77 FTW motherboard as we achieve even higher Ivy Bridge overclocks that we could not reach with our Gigabyte and ECS Z77 motherboards.
Stay tuned, we have plenty more coming including a tale of two mouses (Genius and Microsoft) tomorrow.
