Windows Vista – Service Pack 2 (Beta)
Windows Vista has been under the spotlight for a couple years now and the reception it has received has been mixed. However, even the naysayers have to admit that Service Pack 1 did clear up several issues with Vista that have persisted. The operating system is the most important program on your computer and as such it is always nice to hear about improvements.
Microsoft says that they are committed to improving Windows and hence the next step for Vista is about to begin. Starting on Wednesday, October 29, Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Beta will begin its evaluation. There has been no date set for a final release as it will ultimately depend on the feedback they receive from the beta testers.
Windows Vista SP2 Beta will include all previous fixes that have addressed compatibility, performance and reliability issues.
Service Pack 2 will focus on support for new hardware as well as a few new standards in connectivity. The following additions have so far been identified:
- Windows Vista SP2 adds Windows Search 4.0 for faster and improved relevancy in searches.
- Windows Vista SP2 contains the Bluetooth 2.1 Feature Pack supporting the most recent specification for Bluetooth Technology.
- SP2 adds the ability to record data onto Blu-Ray media natively in Windows Vista.
- Vista SP2 Windows Connect Now (WCN) will simplify Wi-Fi Configuration.
- Windows Vista SP2 enables the exFAT file system to support UTC timestamps, which allows for correct file synchronization across time zones.
We see a simple yet impressive list of features to be added to Vista. The final release will be a nice ‘upgrade’, but for now SP1 is fine and dandy.
