Cooler Master’s Comforter Air – built for your lap top
The Test and Conclusion
We have already seen shockingly high temperatures on this editor’s notebook peak over 105C with the notebook sitting on a table in a warm (80F) room. These high temperatures were caused just by running “normal” activities such as, game playing, photo/video editing, and web surfing.
To accurately gauge the effectiveness of the Comforter Air, we used a 15″ Sony Vaio which is cooler-running than the Compaq. To get the notebook to its maximum temperature we installed No One Lives Forever 2 and played it for 15 minutes while it was sitting directly on a desk.We noted the highest temperature Core Temp reported.
63C is pretty warm. Next, we rebooted and placed our Sony notebook on the Comforter Air and played NOLF 2 for 15 minutes and then noted our results:
Using the Comforter Air, the peak temperatures were 7C cooler by using it over not using it. This extra cooling can be quite significant to the long-term life of a notebook PC and it represents excellent thermal “insurance”.
Considering that it is impossible to use either the Sony Vaio nor the Compaq notebook on ones lap because of the heat they generate, Cooler Master’s Comforter Air now makes it not only possible, but actually comfortable. And any notebook will probably last a lot longer with this cooler than without it no matter where it is used – on a lap or on a desk.
Conclusion
Pros
Cooler Master’s Comforter Air is a product that does exactly what it promises:
1) It allows one to securely set a hot notebook on ones lap and work comfortably sitting on a chair, on the floor, on a couch, or even in bed. The formerly impossible now becomes comfortable with the Comforter Air.
2) The Comforter Air provides good cable management and room to take in cool air even while it is sitting on a desk
3) It provides nearly silent cooling to keep your notebook running cooler and very likely your notebook will last longer.
Cons:
It could perhaps use a USB pass-through as most notebooks lack ports
It does not grip bare legs as well as it grips fabric.
The Verdict:
Cooler Master’s Comforter Air is deserving of ABT’s Great Value award and it is recommended for those who appreciate comfort and peace of mind knowing ones notebook and legs are protected from potentially serious heat-related issues. It may be the very best $30 you can spend for your notebook PC especially if you use it as a laptop.
Please join us on ABT Forum to discuss this specific evaluation. Next up will be an evaluation of the Galaxy GTX 770 Hall of Fame edition which we will compare with the EVGA GTX 770 SC and the reference version. How high were we able to overclock it? The evaluation will be published on Monday.
