Nvidia Drops pricing on GTX 650/660 ahead of AMD’s launch
Nvidia has just announced price drops on some of their mid-range 600 series card in anticipation of the new cards arriving shortly from AMD. The new pricing has already taken place at most of the etailers. Here are the new prices after adjustment:
GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST 1GB: $129
GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST 2GB: $149
GeForce GTX 660: $179
A number of cards from AMD’s new line-up are re-badges of existing HD 7000 series GPUs, which will allow Nvidia to adjust the pricing of their existing cards to strategically compete on price-to-performance, especially after the performance reviews of the new cards are released. AMD has introduced the R9 290X as their flagship which will be taking on Nvidia’s GTX Titan and GTX 780. The new videocard was launched in Hawaii, together with the R9 280X, the R9 270X, the R7 260X and the R7 250.
After the R9 290X and possibly a R9 290, the next card in the lineup is the R9 280X which will have 3GB of vRAM and should cost $299. The 280X is most likely a rebranded/reworked HD 7970 GHz Edition. Like the R9 280X, the R9 270X will be a rebrand, of the HD 7950, with 2GB of vRAM and a pricetag of $199.
Nvidia is not adjusting their $399 suggested pricing for the GTX 770 nor the GTX 760’s $249 slot which suggests that they have a lot of confidence in their current lineup. Here is Nvidia’s public roadmap which was revealed with the GTX 760 launch. It will be interesting to see what will happen as AMD brings out their new lineup and how Nvidia will respond. No matter how you look at it, these price cuts bring an even better value to consumers.
