NVIDIA (does not) plan to make India its headquarters (updated)
UPDATE: We just now heard from NVIDIA’s Senior PR Bryan Del Rizzo, Monday morning, that The Economic Times source we quoted in our original news piece is in error:
While we are expanding into this region as India represents a huge growth market for us, we have no plans to move our HQ to Pune.
(Here is our original story:)
According to EconomicTimes.IndiaTimes.com, NVIDIA is planning to make Pune, India, its headquarters.
US based graphics chip manufacturer Nvidia is planning to make Pune its headquarters over the next five years as it aims to have majority of its headcount based in Pune. It is also planning to make India the hub of all its product development activities.
NVIDIA recently launched its Tegra processor which was developed mostly in India and they expect a quick penetration into the market there with the advent of 3G. In fact, they expect the Tegra processor to account for nearly fifty percent of NVIDIA’s global revenue within a few years. As the Tegra chip is so efficient, it has big potential to reach remote areas that have limited electricity and resources.
“India is a key market for us and especially for the new product Tegra, especially when 3G is launched. Telecom companies can improve their revenues by driving higher amounts of rich multimedia content through their networks when 3G is launched. We are in talks with every telecom company in India to drive Tegra enabled products in the Indian market,” Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO, president and co-founder, Nvidia, said, on a recent trip to Pune.
NVIDIA is also increasing their employees at the Pune facility, up from 1,000 people currently employed there.
“Five years ago we were zero in India, today we have 20% employees in India with critical development work happening from the Pune office. Five years from now, we may have 80% of our global workforce in Pune,” Mr Huang said. “Even I could be based in Pune then,” he added.
What do you think about this globalization? This topic is already being discussed in our forums.
